Salve Races Past Women's Lacrosse

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. –  The Salve Regina women's lacrosse team outscored Wentworth Institute of Technology 13-5 in the first-half and raced to a 20-10 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Gaudet Field.

Wentworth dips to 1-6 in the CCC and 8-6 overall, while the Seahawks jump above .500 overall at 6-5, and improve to 3-4 in the conference.

Both teams traded a pair of goals in the opening ten minutes, as sophomore Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) and senior Leah Cummins (Plymouth, Mass.) tied the score 2-2 with a pair of unassisted tallies. Salve exploded with ten goals over the next 15 minutes, with three coming from Kaity Doherty to lead 12-4 with 5:10 left to play. Senior Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) kept the clock running with an unassisted goal just four seconds later, but Maddie Villareal netted her fourth of the game with just over a minute left in the first half.

After Paradis secured a hat trick at 28:24, Salve scored two quick goals over a three-minute span for the 15-6 lead. Freshman Sarah Galan (Colchester, Mass.) redirected a rebounded shot from Paradis at 23:20 before Salve scored four straight goals, with a free position shot from Villareal enabling running clock at the halfway mark. Wentworth scored the final three goals of the game, two from Rogers and one from Galan, but the clock continued to run for a 20-10 final.

Paradis, Rogers, and Galan each registered a hat trick in the setback, while Cummins scored once. Paradis also won 12 draw controls, which ranks second all-time in the Wentworth women's lacrosse record books. Paradis leads that category with 14, which she set last season against the Seahawks.

Kuhns moves to 6-6 on the season with seven saves in the full 60 minutes, while Salve's Christina Myers improves to 6-5 with 14 saves.

Wentworth will play its final game on Sweeney Field next Wednesday for a crucial league matchup against Gordon. Draw control between the Leopards and the Fighting Scots is set for 4:00 p.m. in Boston.
