BOSTON, Mass. – Seven different student-athletes scored goals, including Aliviah MacCormack, who also had a pair of assists as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team kicked off its 2025 campaign with a 7-5 win over Anna Maria on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MacCormack got things started for Wentworth as she found the back of the net at the 8:04 mark of the opening quarter. A pair of player-up goals, coming 1:19 apart, gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead after one quarter. Grace Sweet scored at 1:32, while Anna Faberlle scored with 13 ticks left. Hayden Saunders made four saves in the opening frame.
- Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie put the hosts on top, 4-0, when she scored with 12:05 left in the second quarter. Anna Maria got on the board five and a half minutes later on a goal from Ivy Ballou and the game remained 4-1 in the Leopards favor at the half.
- The Amcats cut the lead to 4-2 just 11 seconds into the second half on a goal from Riley Michaud. However, the Black & Gold extended their lead to 6-2 on player-up goals from Grace Del Pilar (10:42) and Sydney Vega (10:08). Anna Maria scored twice in a span of 1:58 to bring the lead back to two as Michaud and Christine Ijawet both scored.
- Ijawet made it 6-5 with a player-up goal, coming with 10:15 left in the fourth before Kaitlyn Kozak scored with 6:27 left to give the hosts a two-goal lead. Anna Maria had a shot late to pull the game with one but Saunders came up with a stop, and, with 10 seconds left, another Amcats attempt resulted in a turnover.
- Saunders and Del Pilar scooped up seven and six ground balls, respectively, while Sweet caused three turnovers. Tessa Wilkie won four draw controls for the Leopards. Wentworth had a 31-23 edge in ground balls.
