Bobby Desilets is entering his second year as Wentworth's Women's Soccer Coach and his first year as the sole head coach, a position he shared with current Athletic Director Angel Ayres last season. The team went 6-11-2 last season and 4-5 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play. The season ended on a heartbreaker as the Leopards fell in a shootout to Endicott in the CCC Quarterfinals. The teams battled to a scoreless draw until Endicott edged out Wentworth in the penalty kick round, 3-1. Coach Desilets sat down with Wentworth Athletics to discuss the upcoming season.
WIT: Aside from Coaching Wentworth, you are also involved with a local club soccer team?
BD: I'm the director of coaching on the women's side of one of the major clubs in the area, the Boston Bolts. It has a big impact because it shows players I'm serious about club soccer. I'm well versed in the world of club soccer and I think that's important for recruiting.
WIT: How have the first two weeks been this season?
BD: This season we're really looking to build off our first playoff appearance since 2009. We have a great freshman class that should really help us out moving forward as well as some great upperclassmen.
WIT: Let's talk about your recruiting class. I know you have a big group coming in. How has the team dynamic been?
BD: I have 11 players that are new and 13 returners. The leadership has been great. My three captains Tori Armishaw, Alex Banks and Kelsea Miller are all amazing and have taken on a great role.
WIT: The soccer team always plans a team bonding trip during pre-season. What did your girls do this year?
BD: This year we went up to Mt. Washington and went zip lining, played disc golf, went rock climbing. It was great to make sure all the new faces were accustomed to everyone on the team.
WIT: The girls have already had two scrimmages. How did the team look?
BD: Everything has gone great. We played two really tough opponents. We came from behind in our second scrimmage so it shows how far the team has grown from the beginning of the year.
WIT: What kinds of goals have you and the team established for the year.
BD: We talked about expectations and of course we want to make the playoffs again to build off of last year. We also would like to finish the season with a winning record. I think it's a realistic possibility based on the talent we have.
Coach Desilets and the women's soccer team will start the season at Clark on August 30 at 5:00 p.m.
