WORCESTER, Mass. – The WPI and Wentworth women's soccer teams played to a 2-2 stalemate in a non-conference match on Tuesday night at Alumni Field. With the result, the Engineers move to 6-2-1 while the Leopards now sport a 2-4-2 ledger.
Junior Abbie McIninch (New Kent, Va.) scored the first Engineer goal in three games with a header off a corner kick taken by senior Megan Forti (Lynn, Mass.) late in the fifth minute. With 7:10 remaining in the frame, Wentworth junior Olivia Moore (Salem, Conn.) evened the contest at 1-all with a header following a wild scrum in front of the net following a corner kick. Junior Tori Armishaw (Scarborough, Maine) used the Leopard's first shot on goal of the contest to setup the rebound opportunity. Through 45 minutes, WPI held a slim 9-6 margin in shots and were awarded three of the four corner kicks.
In the 54th minute, Forti's corner kick was batted away by the Wentworth netminder to setup a one-timer off the foot of sophomore Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, Mass.) for the 2-1 advantage. Freshman Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) brought the contest back to a stalemate with 10:47 remaining as she found an opening in the left side of the net from 20 yards out. Freshman Mykaela Scarpace (Marlborough, Conn.) looked to put the Leopards on top with a free kick in the 87th minute but was denied by senior Maddie Willer (Penfield, N.Y.). The Engineers once again outshot the Leopards 9-6 to go along with the only corner kick of the frame.
In the first overtime, Moore had a pair of golden opportunities but her breakaway attempts were broken up inside the box. Sophomore Miranda Stuckey (Lafayette, Ind.) thwarted a pair of chances by Forti in the waning moments of the second overtime session to keep the game knotted at 2-2.
Willer collected six saves for WPI while Stuckey stopped 12 as each backstop recorded a pair of saves in the second overtime.
Both teams are on the road this Saturday. WPI heads back into NEWMAC action with a trip to regionally-ranked Wheaton for a 1pm showdown while Wentworth resumes its Commonwealth Coast Conference slate with a noon tilt at Endicott.
