Women's Soccer Ends Regular Season With 2-2 Tie

Women's Soccer Ends Regular Season With 2-2 Tie

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of New England women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in a span of 3:06 to erase a 2-0 halftime deficit and earn a 2-2 tie with Wentworth Institute of Technology in the regular season finale for both squads.

With the tie Wentworth sits at 6-8-4 overall and ends Commonwealth Coast Conference play at 4-3-2. The Nor'Easters sit at 8-8-2 (4-3-2).

UNE looked like it would draw first blood in the 16th minute, however junior Margaret Palmer's (Scarborough, Maine) shot nicked the crossbar and went out of play.

The game remained tied until the 28:19 mark when freshman Morgan Miller (Schenectady, N.Y.) fed a pass to junior Olivia Moore (Salem, Conn.), who put home a shot to the right side. Just 37 seconds later the Leopards increased their lead to 2-0 when Moore took a shot that was initially saved by freshman Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.), however the rebound came out to freshman Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.), who found the back of the net. With her assist on the goal, Moore set a new Wentworth single season record for points with 39, eclipsing Kristen Kudlic's mark of 38, set in 2008.

UNE cut the lead to 2-1 at 49:03 when Palmer fed junior Kaitlyn Hall (Dayton, Maine), who buried a shot to the right side. Hall got the equalizer at 52:09 when she took a pass from freshman Taylor Littlefield (Sanford, Maine) and put a shot inside the left post.

Both teams had chances to net the game winner in regulation, however neither team would break the stalemate.

The Nor'Easters held a 2-1 shot advantage in the first overtime, with both shots going on target. However, junior Nicole Leahey (Warwick, R.I.) made a pair of saves to keep the game tied. In the second overtime UNE had a chance when a shot from the left side was headed towards the net, however a Leopard defender cleared the ball.

Wentworth had a pair chances late, but both shots were blocked by Nor'Easter defenders.

Leahey finished with three saves in 51:21 of action, as she came on for sophomore Miranda Stuckey (Lafayette, Ind.), who made four saves in 58:39 of work. Robinson made six stops for the visitors. Wentworth held a 20-18 shot advantage and 5-1 edge on corner kicks.

Both teams have earned berths in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Saturday. Pairings, sites, and times will be announced Wednesday night.
