Strong First Half Lifts Women's Soccer Past Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Junior Valeria Zapata (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored a pair of goals in a span of 9:29 early in the first half to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology  women's soccer team to its second straight win, a 3-1 triumph over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

With the win the Leopards improve to 5-2 overall and even their CCC record at 1-1 while the Colonels fall to 5-2 (0-2).

Zapata wasted little time getting the Leopards on the board as she scored just 34 seconds into the contest. At the 10:13 mark Zapata netted her sixth marker of the season, which gave the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Just over 11 minutes later the visitors rounded out their scoring as a foul was committed in the box, which gave the Black & Gold a penalty kick. Senior Olivia Moore (Salem, Conn.) stepped up and buried her second penalty kick in as many seasons to increase the lead to 3-0.

Wentworth held a 9-4 shot advantage through the first 45:00 of play with six of the nine shots going on target.

Zapata had a chance to record her second hat trick in as many games early in the second half when the Leopards were awarded a corner kick. However, her attempt off the kick went wide.

On the next possession Curry broke through and made it a 3-1 game, thanks to a goal off the foot of junior Taylor Evans (Middleton, Mass.) at 46:54.

The Colonels applied pressure and took four shots over the remainder of the second half, however, only one went on target.

Senior Beverly Farris (Palmer, Mass.) made four saves in the win while sophomore Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) made nine saves for Curry. The Leopards held a 19-9 shot advantage while the Colonels had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams host non-conference games on Tuesday night. Wentworth entertains WPI while Curry hosts Fitchburg State.
