BOSTON, Mass. – Second half goals from Senior Lauren Bulk (Portsmouth, R.I.) and freshman Francesca Galeazzi (Lynn, Mass.) lifted the Salve Regina University women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Seahawks snap a three-game losing streak and improve to 3-5-0 overall and pick up their first CCC win of the season (1-2). The Leopards see their three-game unbeaten streak come to a halt, falling to 5-3-1 (1-2).
The hosts had a pair of chances early on in the contest, including when sophomore Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) was set up in front but her shot would hit the crossbar in the 15th minute. In the closing minutes of the opening half the Leopards would have a pair of corner kicks and put a shot on net, however the half ended 0-0. Wentworth held a 10-5 advantage in shots through the first 45:00.
Salve Regina began to apply pressure in the second half, taking five of the first six shots, however none of the five were on target. At 73:22 the Seahawks broke the ice as freshman Taylor Meyers (Washington Township, N.J.) threaded a pass into the box where Bulk deposited a shot inside the near post.
Wentworth would have a solid opportunity in the 81st on a free kick from sophomore Mary Pastorelli (Portsmouth, R.I.), however freshman Emily Cuellar (Providence, R.I.) made a save on the play.
With 6:03 remaining, Salve Regina got what would prove to be the game-winning goal as junior Anna Shultz (Higganum, Conn.) took a shot which initially deflected off the crossbar, however on the rebound, grazed senior keeper Nicole Leahey (Warwick, R.I.) and went over the line.
The Leopards pulled within a goal with 58 seconds remaining as freshman Heather MacDougall (Exeter, N.H.) fed sophomore Mykaela Scarpace (Marlbrough, Conn.) who fired a shot which beat Cuellar to the upper left side.
Cuellar made eight saves for Salve Regina while Leahey made three for the Black & Gold. Wentworth had a 20-13 shot advantage and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Wentworth is at Western Connecticut on Monday night while Salve Regina is at Coast Guard on Wednesday.
