BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Jules Peno (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) registered the lone goal in the match as the Eastern Nazarene College women's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 1-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Lions improve to 5-7-0 overall and even their CCC record at 2-2. The Leopards slip to 5-5-1 overall and 1-3 in league play.
Both sides managed to keep the first half close, as the Lions took seven shots, while the Leopards fired off six. The one and only goal was scored by Speno off a set piece at 24:28. Speno was set up on the top left of the box and bent the shot into the lower right side. Both goalkeepers recorded two saves in the first half and each side took two corner kicks as well.
At 60:01, Eastern Nazarene looked to have extended its lead to two thanks to a goal from sophomore Hannah Scahill (Quaker Hill, Conn.), but the play was nullified because of an offsides call. At 75:38, Wentworth appeared to tie the match 1-1 with a goal of its own off of a rebound, but that play was also called offsides. Both teams had six shots in the second half.
Eastern Nazarene outshot Wentworth 13-12 in the match. Speno took six of her team's shots, with four on goal. Freshman midfielder Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) led the Leopards with five shots, with four on goal.
Senior Beverly Farris (Palmer, Mass.) made five saves for the Leopards, while junior Kristen Farley (Westminster, Mass.) saved six shots for the Lions.
Wentworth travels to UMass Boston on Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup. Eastern Nazarene's next match is on Tuesday at Brandeis.
