BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Tori Armishaw (Scarborough, Maine) and sophomore Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) each had a goal and an assist, while senior keeper Nicole Leahey (Warwick, R.I.) made three saves as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team defeated Framingham State 4-0 in non-conference action on Sweeney Field Thursday night.
The Leopards snap a six-game (0-4-2) winless streak, with their first win since September 20 and improves to 6-6-2 overall. The Rams see their three-game wins streak come to an end, falling to 8-5-0.
On Wentworth's first corner kick of the match at 18:26, sophomore Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) sent the ball to Armishaw, who netted the ball inside the low left post for the 1-0 lead. The Leopards took three more corners in the first, but weren't able to capitalize on the opportunities.
Wentworth's second goal would come near the conclusion of the first at 43:27, as sophomore Kristen Carroll (Tewksbury, Mass.) took a sophomore Mykaela Scarpace (Matlborough, Conn.) pass and sent a shot into the open net. The Leopards finished the first half up 2-0 despite being outshot by a 10-7 margin.
The Leopards extended their lead 12:09 into the second half after sophomore Mary Pastorelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) sent a corner kick into a mob of players that was eventually dug out by Armishaw, who made a pass to Weinberger who tallied her sixth marker of the year.
Wentworth widened the lead to four with a senior Olivia Moore (Salem, Conn.) goal at 65:50. Weinberger sent a pass to Moore from the right flank into the box and Moore shot it into the center of the goal.
All of Leahey's saves came in the first half as she recorded her first shutout of the season. Framingham State junior Sara Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) made five saves for the Rams, who held a 17-13 edge in shots.
Wentworth continues play on Sweeney Field on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. as they square off against Commonwealth Coast Conference foe Western New England. Framingham State hosts Fitchburg State in a MASCAC matchup on Saturday.
