Roger Williams Halts Women's Soccer's Win Streak

BRISTOL, R.I. – A pair of second-half goals erased an early deficit as the Roger Williams women's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.

With the win the Hawks, ranked ninth in New England, improve to 13-2-3 overall and 5-0-2 in CCC play, while the Leopards even their record at .500 (7-7-2, 2-4-1).

The two teams had to battle more than each other as heavy rain and strong winds made play challenging and would lead to an early Wentworth goal. Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) took a corner kick from the right side of the box. Roger Williams attempted to head the ball out, however the attempt was headed into the Hawks' own goal at 9:25.

Early into the second half, Roger Williams knotted the game at a goal apiece as Jessica Valenti (North Reading, Mass.) sent a pass up the middle to Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.). Kaiser came around the Leopard defense to the ball and put up a shot up the middle on net to tie the game at one apiece.

Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) broke the stalemate in the 68th minute when Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) slipped a pass backwards to Tetreault on the left side of the net. Tetreault stepped up and knocked a shot to the middle of the net.

Tetreault's goal would end up as the game-winner, as the score held up while both teams played through the Nor'Easter battering down New England.

Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) had seven saves for Roger Williams in the win, while Nicole Leahey (Warwick, R.I.) made seven stops as for Wentworth in the loss.

On Saturday, Roger Williams will host the University of New England, while Wentworth welcomes Endicott.
