Women's Soccer Kicks Off Season With Shutout at Clark

WORCESTER, Mass. – Wentworth Institute of Technology juniors Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) and Morgan Miller (Schenectady, N.Y.) each recorded a goal and an assist as the Leopards defeated Clark University, 2-0, in non-conference action on Tuesday evening on the Granger Soccer Turf. With the win, the Leopards commence their campaign with a victory over the Cougars for the second straight season.

The Leopards' offense registered eight first half shots, including a trio of attempts by Annon, who fired home the match's initial goal at 34:33 following a feed from Miller. Clark attempted to even the score, firing four consecutive shots during the final minutes, but none of the attempts landed in the Wentworth net.

Annon attempted to grow the Leopards' lead in the opening minutes of the second half, but saw her attempt denied by Clark senior goalkeeper Gabby Paolini (North Potomac, Md.) at 52:37. Wentworth continued to pepper Paolini with attempts from senior Jackie McCullough (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and sophomore Ali Leach (Stowe, Vt.), but neither shot landed in Clark's net.

The Leopards eventually found the back of the net at 67:00 when Annon served a corner kick into the box where Miller collected the ball and fired a shot to make it 2-0.

Wentworth's offense continue to pepper Paolini for the remainder of the session, but Paolini turned away a trio of attempts, including a pair of shots from junior Mykaela Scarpace (Marlboro, Conn.) at 76:12 and 76:18, respectively.

Freshman Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) earned her first collegiate win in net for the Leopards, recording 40:31 between the pipes, while classmates Rachel Schaeffer (Lumberton, N.J.) and Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) combined for 49:29 seconds of playing time. None of Wentworth's three keepers needed to make a save.

Wentworth concluded the match with 18 shots, including 13 attempts on net. Both teams earned three corners, while Paolini recorded 11 saves.

Both teams return to action on Thursday, September 3 as Wentworth travels to New England College for a 7:00 p.m. match, while Clark heads to Nichols College for a 4:00 p.m. start.
