Women's Soccer Suffers First Defeat

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.) netted the game's only goal with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation to lift the Roger Williams women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads.

With the win the Hawks, winners of three straight, improve to 4-0-1 (1-0) while the Leopards suffer their first setback of the season (4-1-0, 0-1). The game was a re-match of the 2014 CCC title game where the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie before Roger Williams took the crown on penalty kicks.

Neither team was able to get much going in the first half, as evidenced by a total of nine shots combined (four on net) with Wentworth freshman Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) and Roger Williams sophomore Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) each stopping both attempts.

The stalemate continued in the early stages of the second half with the Leopards putting the only shot on goal. The Hawks had a chance on a corner kick in the 70th minute, however the attempt was cleared out before a shot could be attempted.

Hart's marker came when sophomore Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) sent in a cross from the left side. The balls was loose in front before Hart was able to get a foot on it and put a shot in the right side.

Wentworth had a corner kick late in the contest was but unable to convert and a last-second shot attempt to tie the game could go wide.

Martin made three saves to record her third shutout of the season while Robinson stopped four shots. Roger Williams had a 12-9 shot advantage while the Leopards held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Wentworth is at Albertus Magnus on Wednesday while Roger Williams hosts MIT on Tuesday.
