Women's Soccer Rallies Past Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore Emily Richard's (Fremont, N.H.) goal early in the second half snapped a 1-all tie as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

With the win the Leopards improve to 5-1-1 overall and even their record to 1-1 in CCC play while the Golden Bears drop their third straight to stand at 1-5-2 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.

The hosts wasted little time getting on the board as senior Jessica Burke (Belchertown, Mass.) scored off a feed from senior Alicia Lewis (Johnsonville, N.Y.) just 54 seconds into the contest.

Junior Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) got the equalizer for the Leopards at the 9:54 mark as she was set up by classmates Michelle Murphy (West Islip, N.Y.) and Morgan Miller (Schenectady, N.Y.).

Wentworth carried play through the remainder of the first half, however could not break the stalemate, despite a couple of scoring chances late in the stanza.

In the 61st minute, the Golden Bears had a chance to take a 2-1 lead when Lewis put a shot on goal, however freshman Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) came up with the save. Just over a minute later, Annon would set up Richard with what would be the game-winning marker.

Robinson made a save on a senior Emma Norden (Belchertown, Mass.) shot in the 62nd minute and, in the 63rd minute, Richard nearly gave the Black & Gold a 3-1 lead, however her attempt was stopped by senior Brianna Kubik (Blanford, Mass.).

Wentworth held a 10-6 shot advantage while Robinson made three saves and Kubik made four. Western New England had a 2-1 edge on corner kicks.

The Leopards are at WPI on Tuesday while the Golden Bears are at Elms, also on Tuesday.
