BOSTON, Mass. – Four different members of the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team located the back of the net as the Leopards claimed a 4-0 victory against Curry College in the Commonwealth Coast Conference quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
With the win, the Leopards tally their program record 16th victory of the season (16-2-1) and extend their record win streak to 11 contests. Wentworth advances to the conference semifinals – for the third straight season – on Wednesday, Nov. 4 and will host Gordon College at 7:00 p.m., as the Fighting Scots upset the University of New England, 2-1, in overtime. Curry sees its season conclude with an overall mark of 13-6-1.
Sophomore Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) helped Wentworth set the tone early, netting her fifth goal of the season in the fourth minute of play. Junior Mykaela Scarpace (Marlborough, Conn.) would set-up her team's initial marker, finding Richard at the top of the box at 3:39.
Roughly seven minutes later, Wentworth registered its second goal as Scarpace fired in a feed from sophomore Ali Leach (Stowe, Vt.) at 10:59. Leach located her teammate from the left side, which provided the hosts with a two-goal advantage. The goal was Scarpace's sixth of the season.
Junior Mary Pastorelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) would cap the first half offensive output, sending a corner from the far flag that deflected off the Curry goaltender and landed into the lower left corner of the net. The goal - Pastorelli's third of the season – provided the hosts with a three-point cushion at the break.
Wentworth's offensive momentum continued in the second half as freshman Gwen Harvey (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied her first collegiate goal at 48:56. Harvey sent home a feed from junior Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.), who located her teammate off a corner kick from the far flag.
Neither team would locate the back of the net for the remainder of the session despite 14 shots by Wentworth and 11 by Curry. Wentworth concluded the match with 26 shots compared to Curry, which recorded 13 attempts. The Leopards held an advantage in corners, three to one, while freshman Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) turned away six shots. Curry junior Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) turned away 10 shots.
In the regular-season meeting between Wentworth and Gordon the Leopards won, 3-0, on Sept. 26.
