AMHERST, Mass. – Freshman Laura Greer (Boulder Colo.) scored the game's only goal, coming with 11:45 remaining in regulation, to lift the Amherst College women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a battle of regionally ranked teams Sunday afternoon.
The Lord Jeffs, who entered the contest ranked second in the NSCAA Division III New England Poll and 10th in the NSCAA Division III Natonal Poll, improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Leopards, who were ranked ninth in the latest regional poll, fall to 4-2-1.
Amherst had three shots in a span of nearly four minutes early in the contest, however sophomore Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) came up with three saves to keep the hosts off the board. In the 16th minute, junior Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) had Wentworth's first chance of the game, but her shot attempt was saved by sophomore Chelsea Cutler (Westport, Conn.).
The Lord Jeffs came close to going ahead in the 29th minute but junior Hannah Guzzi's (Southborough, Mass.) attempt hit the post. Amherst had a 9-2 shot advantage at the half.
Freshman Sidney Brogan's (Los Angeles, Calif.) chance in the 50th minute went wide of the net and the hosts countered in the 56th minute with a shot off the post. The Leopards had a pair of corner kicks in a three-minute span midway through the half, however were unable to generate a scoring chance. Sophomore Madyson Reno (Simi Valley, Calif.) had a shot to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute but Cutler made the save on her attempt.
Amherst broke the deadlock at 78:15 when Greer scored on a feed from freshman Sloan Askins (Pasadena, Calif.). Reno had a chance to tie the game with just under three minutes remaining, however her header went to the left of the net.
Cutler made three saves in picking up the win while Robinson made seven stops in the loss. The Lord Jeffs had a 16-5 shot advantage while the Leopards doubled Amherst up on corner kicks, 4-2.
Wentworth hosts WPI on Wednesday night.
