Framingham State Halts Women's Soccer's Streak

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Kayla Almstrom (Auburn, Mass.) scored with 7:48 remaining in the second overtime to life the Framingham State women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Wednesday night at Sweeney Field.

With the win the Rams snap a six-game losing streak and improve to 4-8-0 on the season. The Leopards see both their five-game win streak and six-game unbeaten streak snapped, falling to 9-3-2 on the season.

Framingham State wasted little time getting on the board, scoring just 27 seconds into the contest. Senior Michaela Hyland (East Longmeadow, Mass.) took advantage of a Wentworth turnover and put home a shot from the left center of the top of the box.

The Rams continued to pressure and increased their lead to 2-0 at the 18:54 mark. Sophomore Hannah Kane (North Attleboro, Mass.) took a direct kick which was initially saved by sophomore Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.). However, Fleming could not control the ball and senior Angela Pallotta (Sterling, Mass.) tapped the ball in.

At the 26:12 mark, Wentworth got on the board on a goal from freshman Sidney Brogan (Los Angeles, Calif.). Senior Mykaela Scarpace (Marlborough, Conn.) sent a ball from the left side to Brogan, whose shot from the center of the box hit the crossbar and came down and over the line. Shots were even at 6-all through the first half.

Both teams would have chances in the second half, including when a Framingham State shot hit the crossbar in the 47th minute. Wentworth appeared to have tied the game in the 83rd minute, however the goal was negated due to an offside call.

With 3:27 left in regulation, the Leopards evened the game at 2-all on a sophomore Madyson Reno (Simi Valley, Calif.) goal. Senior Mary Annon (Concord, N.H.) sent a corner kick in from the right. Reno came up to play the ball and fired a shot past sophomore Keyonzia Gagne-Lamoureux (East Brookfield, Mass.).

In the first overtime, Wentworth had a pair of chances early as Reno put a shot on net and senior Amanda Weinberger (Colchester, Conn.) had a bid from in front which went over the top of the net. The Leopards nearly won the game in the 98th minute, however were called for being offside on the play.

Framingham State opened the second overtime with a shot which was cleared out at the last second by a Leopard back line defender. At 102:12, the Rams got the golden goal when freshman Jill Smith (Weymouth, Mass.) sent a pass in from the right side. Almstrom one-timed it inside the right post from the top of the box.

Gagne-Lamoureux made 10 saves for Framingham State while Fleming made five stops for Wentworth. The Leopards had advantages in shots (21-15) and corner kicks (2-1).

Both teams are in action on Saturday as Wentworth is at Gordon and Framingham State is at Salem State.
