Women's Soccer Edged by Babson in Season Opener

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Sophomore Maggie McCabe (Medfield, Mass.) scored the second of her two goals in the 87th minute as the Babson College women's soccer team rallied to defeat Wentworth, 2-1, in the season opener for both teams on Friday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

McCabe's second marker of the games came nearly 10 minutes after she gained the equalizer to help the Beavers pick up the victory.

While the first half was scoreless and saw the two teams combine for nine shots, the second half opened with Wentworth junior Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) putting the visitors ahead just 4:28 into the frame. Richard sent a thru ball which was initially deflected by a defender and regained possession. She fired a low shot to find the back of the net.

Babson tested junior Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) with a pair of shots in the first 20 minutes of the second half, however Fleming kept Wentworth ahead. At the 76:50 mark, McCabe evened the score when she took a feed from sophomore Julia Janikies (Coventry, R.I.) and chipped a shot past Fleming.

McCabe's game winner came after a long run where her shot from the edge of the box found the top corner.

Sophomore Maddison Gierschick (Hopkinton, Mass.) made six saves in the win. Fleming took the loss, making three saves in the final 45:00. Classmate Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) played the first half and made a pair of saves.

The Beavers had a 13-9 shot advantage and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.

Wentworth has its home opener on Tuesday night against Emmanuel.
