Western Connecticut Edges Women's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Autumn Sorice's (Bethel, Conn.) goal with 6:35 remaining in regulation snapped a 1-all tie and lifted the Western Connecticut State University women's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action Monday night.

With the win the Colonials remain undefeated, improving to 9-0-0 on the season while the Leopards fall to 3-5-1. The one-goal margin was the sixth straight in the series.

Despite the first being scoreless, Wentworth carried play and had chances to take the lead. The Leopards had a 12-8 shot advantage in the opening half and took five corner kicks to Western's two. Wentworth junior Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) had a pair of saves in the first 45:00 while Colonial senior Jillian Fernandez (Columbia, Conn.) made three, including two from right in front.

Western Connecticut took a 1-0 lead on a goal from junior Aileen Mahoney (Trumbull, Conn.). Mahoney gained possession from a Wentworth defender along the low right side and fired a shot from outside the box which deflected off a Leopard defender and went inside the left post.

Less than 10 minutes later the hosts got the equalizer when senior Heather MacDougall (Exeter, N.H.) fed a pass from along the right side to senior Ali Leach (Stowe, Vt.). Leach gained control and found the back of the net at 71:12. The goal was just the second all season given up by the Colonials and the first in the last 535:41.

Sorice netted the game winner on a feed from Maloney, who fed a thru ball from midfield where Sorice dribbled into the box and beat Robinson to the left side.

Fernandez finished with seven saves while Robinson had five. Shots (20-20) and corner kicks (6-6) were even.

Wentworth is at Salve Regina on Saturday.
