Western New England Breaks Away from Women's Soccer

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Two different players scored goals and senior Brooke Labrie (Granby, Mass.) added a pair of assists as the Western New England University women's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Bears snapped a seven-game series losing streak to the Leopards, winning for the first time since September 21, 2010, and improve to 6-6-2 overall (4-1-0 CCC). Wentworth falls to 4-8-1 overall and 2-2-1 in league play.

Wentworth had a chance for an early goal, however sophomore Sidney Brogan's (Los Angeles, Calif.) bid was cleared away by a back line defender. Western New England had a 6-2 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes of play, however junior Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N,Y.) kept the hosts off the board with four saves.

The game remained scoreless until the 82:17 mark when Labrie served a free kick towards the box and freshman Shawna O'Neill (Worcester, Mass.) put a shot home to the left side. With 32 seconds remaining Labrie set up an insurance goal as freshman Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) took the pass from midfield and beat Robinson to the bottom left corner.

Sophomore Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) made one save for the Golden Bears while Robinson made eight stops for Wentworth. Western New England had a 16-5 shot advantage and took all five of the game's corner kicks.
