Women's Soccer Edged by Roger Williams

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Ali Waxgiser's (Harding, N.J.) goal with 13:34 remaining in the first half provided the only offense of the game and senior Natalie O'Donovan (Quincy, Mass.) made six saves to record the shutout as the Roger Williams University women's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 1-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Winners of three straight the Hawks improve to 8-6-2 overall and 5-0-1 in league play while the Leopards, who honored the five members of their senior class prior to the game, fall to 4-9-1 (2-3-1).

Roger Williams carried play in the early going and would finish the first half with a 10-2 shot advantage as well as taking four corner kicks to Wentworth's two. Both of the Leopards shots went on goal, however were denied by O'Donovan.

Waxgiser's marker came after junior Arianna Delli Carpini (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) came up with a loose ball in the top right of the box. She flicked the ball to Waxgiser, who beat junior Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) to the right side.

The second half saw Wentworth hold a 9-3 shot advantage, with four of the Leopards' shots going on net. With just under seven minutes remaining, the Black & Gold had a golden opportunity to tie the game, however, sophomore Jess Poratti's (Essex Junction, Vt.) shot along the right side hit the post. With just under three minutes remaining, senior Emily Richard (Fremont, N.H.) nearly tied the game but her header off a corner kick went high.

Four of O'Donovan's six stops came in the second half while Robinson made five saves for Wentworth. Roger Williams had a 13-11 shot advantage and a 5-4 edge on corner kicks.

Wentworth is at Endicott on Tuesday while Roger Williams hosts Lasell on Tuesday.
