Patti's Double Overtime Game-Winner Sends Women's Soccer Past Emerson

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Taylor Patti (Pittsfield, Mass.) scored the game-winner in double overtime to propel the Wentworth women's soccer team over Emerson College, 2-1, on Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field.

The Leopards win their third straight contest and improve to 3-2-1 overall, while the Lions drop to 3-2 this season.

After a scoreless first half, junior Jess Poratti put the Leopards on the board in the 52nd minute with her third goal of the season. Following a Lions' foul, sophomore Julia Watler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) lofted a free kick into the box for Poratti to perfectly place past freshman keeper Megan Rose (Danville, Conn.). Rose then turned a shot away from sophomore Abigail Meyers (Leicester, Mass.) just a minute later, before Lions' sophomore Amanda Benavente (Boca Raton, Fla.) scored the equalizer in the 54th minute. Benavente capitalized on a scramble inside the six-yard-box, and fired the ball near post to deadlock the match 1-1.

Despite 18 combined shots from both teams in the second half, the 1-1 result stood at the end of regulation, sending both teams into overtime. Rose made two saves in the first overtime period, but was finally bested in the 102nd minute. Sophomore Emma daSilva (Lowell, Mass.) sent a textbook corner kick inside the six-yard-box, as Patti redirected the ball into the upper right netting to send the Lions home.

Senior Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) made six saves in the victory, while Rose made five shots in net for the Lions.

The Leopards return to Sweeney Field on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. match with UMass Boston.
