BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team broke a 1-1 tie in the 79th minute and added a goal of insurance with eight minutes left to play to defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
The Beacons move to .500 at 3-3 this season, while the Leopards fall to 3-3-1.
UMass Boston broke open the scoring in the 33rd minute, capitalizing on an open transition up the left side. Freshman Jahlyla Ocampo (Braintree, Mass.) sped up the wing and framed the ball in the direct center of the six-yard-box, and was redirected to the left netting from freshman Grace Oliver (Rockland, Mass.).
Beacons' freshman keeper Abby McCulloch (Weymouth, Mass.) stopped all three shots on net in the first half, but was bested in the 51st minute, as WIT sophomore Abigail Meyers (Leicester, Mass.) netted her first goal of the season. Classmate Emma daSilva (Lowell, Mass.) sent the ball in off a throw-in, finding Meyers just outside the six-yard-box, for the one-touch volley near-post.
The Beacons broke the 1-1 score in the 79th minute on a corner kick, after a controversial call from the official that was originally set as a goal kick. After the switch, freshman Allie Crawford (Kingston, Mass.) lofted the corner kick into the box, and freshman Morgan Palma (Halifax, Mass.) finished far-post with her first goal of 2018. UMass Boston put the game out of reach with an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, off of another set play, as Crawford directed a free kick into the box that found the back of the net from freshman Grace McGettrick (Marshfield, Mass.).
McCulloch made nine saves in net for the Beacons, while senior Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) suffered the loss with one save.
Wentworth returns to Sweeney Field on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. match against WPI.
