McGrath Sends Women's Soccer over WPI

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Grace McGrath (Warwick, R.I.) scored in the 17th minute to send the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team over WPI on Wednesday evening, 1-0, at Sweeney Field.

The Leopards' win against the Engineers comes for the first time since 2002, snapping a 15-game losing streak to WPI, and improve to 4-3-1 this season. The Engineers drop to 5-3 overall with their third straight setback.

The Leopards put their first shot of the game in the back of the net at the 16-minute mark, as McGrath put the ball in the upper-90 for her first goal of the season. The Engineers had their chances, peppering senior keeper Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) with five shots on target in the first half, but fell short of putting one in the back of the net.

The Engineers' best offensive chance came in the 57th minute, first hitting the crossbar followed by a save in front of the net by Fleming. That was as close as the Engineers would get to finding the back of the net, as the Leopards played shutdown defense for the remainder of the match.

Fleming saved all eight shots faced in the win, bringing her record to 3-2-1 on the season with her third shutout of 2018. Engineers' senior keeper Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, Conn.) only saw one shot on net and was unable to deny it, dropping her record on the season to 5-3-0.

The Leopards open conference play on Saturday, September 22, when they kick off with Curry College on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Milton, Mass.
