Balanced Offense Sends Women’s Soccer Past Southern Maine

BOSTON, Mass. - The Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards women's soccer team took down the University of Southern Maine Huskies Wednesday evening 3-1 at Sweeney Field.

Junior Jess Poratti (Essex Junction, Vt.) and sophomores Abigail Meyers (Leicester, Mass.) and Molly Donahue (Quincy, Mass.) each found the back of the net for Wentworth in the victory, while Poratti and Meyers also dished out an assist apiece.

The first twenty-six minutes was filled with plenty of near misses and close opportunities namely from sophomores Emma daSilva (Lowell, Mass.) and Meyers. The Leopards opened the scoring in the twenty-sixth minute with a goal scored by Poratti on a through ball from Meyers for an early 1-0 lead. The Huskies had their fair share of chances in the first half by way of junior Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) with multiple shots landing either wide or high, including a shot that dinged the crossbar in the 43rd minute.

The Leopards put the pedal to the floor offensively after the halftime break, scoring two goals in the second half. Meyers was first to strike in the 62nd minute with a laser to the upper left corner off a pass from the right flank from Poratti to increase the WIT lead to 2-0. Just 52 seconds later, Donahue scored her second goal of the season off a missed clear attempt from the Huskies to stretch the lead to 3-0 with just under twenty-seven minutes remaining in the match.

The Huskies eventually found the back of the net after a scramble in the box that resulted in a goal from senior Ally Little (Stoneham, Mass.) for her first goal on the season. The Leopards played lockdown defense for the duration of the match to halt the Huskies at one.

Leopards' senior keeper Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) earned the win in net with one save and moves to 4-2-2 this season, while sophomore Allison Haynes (Shelton, Conn.) played 13:44 of relief. The Huskies' senior keeper Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.) denied three of the six shots on net tonight dropping her record to 7-2 on the season while junior Taylor Esty (Lewiston, Maine) didn't record a save in just under eleven minutes of play.

The Leopards take on Gordon College (5-4-0) Saturday September 29th at 12 PM in Wenham, Mass. at The Quad.
