Western New England Downs Women's Soccer in Overtime

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Bee Murphy (Monson, Mass.) propelled the Western New England University women's soccer team over Wentworth Institute of Technology in the 101st minute, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at Sweeney Field.

The Golden Bears improve to 3-3-1 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) and advance to 6-6-1 overall, while the Leopards drop to 1-2-1 in the CCC and 6-5-2 this season.

Overall, Wentworth held a 20-14 advantage in shots, and had its offensive chances early as freshman Ashley Molnar (Northridge, Calif.) took a promising bid on net in the third minute. Molnar was denied by a completely outstretched save from keeper Alex Lemekha (Stamford, Conn.) to keep the contest scoreless for the time being.

Just before the end of the first half, senior Madyson Reno (Superior, Colo.) broke open the scoring in the 42nd minute, finishing far-post off a through-ball from sophomore Molly Donahue (Quincy, Mass.).

Reno rode momentum into the second half, and rattled off two shots, one stopped by Lemekha, before Western New England answered with a goal of their own in the 56th minute. Freshman Allison Beuehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) created the goal-scoring play with a cross into the six-yard-box from the right side, and found the forehead of sophomore Kristin Decost (Hudson, N.H.) for the 1-1 score.

Both teams combined for three shots apiece in the two overtime segments, before Murphy's strike sent the Golden Bears home with the game-winner and her second of the season. Sophomore Morgan Smith (Manchester, Conn.) laid down a quick pass from midfield, leading Murphy to a quick touch before she fired the ball far-post.

Lemekha made six saves in the win, and improves to 2-1 in net for Western New England. Wentworth senior keeper Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) made four saves in the effort and drops to 5-4-2.

The Leopards return to Sweeney Field on Thursday for a non-conference match against Bridgewater State.
