Women's Soccer Earns Crucial Conference Victory at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – For the first time since 2005, the Wentworth women's soccer team served Roger Williams University a defeat in Bristol, R.I., downing the Hawks 2-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Leopards earn their first-ever win against the Hawks on their home turf, and snap a 14-game winless streak with the CCC foe. Wentworth improves to 7-8-2 overall, and keeps its postseason hopes alive at 2-4-1 in the conference. Roger Williams drops to 7-10 overall and 4-3 against league opponents.

Gabbi Rozumek (Woodstock, Vt.) put RWU on the board first with an unassisted goal two minutes into the game. Roger Williams had three offensive opportunities to follow on one corner kick and two shots, one of which was turned away by senior keeper Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.). In the 14th minute, Leopards' freshman Ashley Molnar (Northridge, Calif.) equalized the score with an unassisted goal, her second of the season.

In the 31st minute, junior Jess Poratti (Essex Junction, Vt.) converted on a penalty kick to give Wentworth a 2-1 lead. The Leopards held on and saw two saves from Fleming that preserved the 2-1 lead heading into the halftime break.

The home team had plenty of offensive chances in the second half, outshooting Wentworth 7-2, but Fleming stopped all four shots on target to keep the Hawks at bay. Hawks' junior Ericca Broderick (Great Barrington, Mass.) nearly sent the game into extra time with 16 seconds left in regulation, but Fleming capped a solid performance in net with a save on the header.

Fleming made seven saves in between the pipes for Wentworth, and moves to 6-7-2 on the season.  Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, Mass.) had two saves for the Hawks.
