UNE Tops Women's Soccer in Regular Season Finale

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Despite senior Danielle McDonnell (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) scoring her first collegiate goal, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team dropped its final regular season contest to the University of New England, 2-1, on Tuesday evening.

Wentworth concludes the regular season at 7-9-2 and finishes at 2-5-1 in the conference, while UNE shifts to 7-7-2 this season and 5-2-1 against league opponents.

Although there was little offensive action for both teams in the first half, UNE scored on one of its two shots on net in the 14thminute from Katie Beaudoin. Both squads shifted gears in the second frame, as UNE outshot Wentworth 11-9 and 6-4 on target. Caroline Wilson gave the hosts a 2-0 lead in the 56thminute, finishing a feed from Amanda Gagne.

Wentworth showed life in the 66thminute, as McDonnell scored the first goal of her career off a pass from junior Jess Poratti (Essex Junction, Vt.). In a battle of the goalkeepers, both WIT's Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) and UNE's Peighton Barker kept the opposition at bay, as the 2-1 score held out in favor of the Nor'easters.

Wentworth now awaits its CCC playoff fate, which begins next week.
