Stickelman Boosts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win over Defending CCC Champion UNE

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Alexis Stickelman (East Northport, N.Y.) propelled the Wentworth women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over defending CCC Champions UNE on Wednesday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Stickelman's first goal of her career moves Wentworth to 6-10-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference, while UNE drops to 8-5-2 and 3-3 against league opponents.

SCORING

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Wentworth dominated both sides of the field in the conference victory and held UNE scoreless through 45 minutes thanks to three saves from junior Allison Haynes (Shelton, Conn.).
  • Both teams stepped onto the field after halftime with a 0-0 score before Stickelman stunned junior keeper Kenna Pannone with a textbook header off a corner kick from classmate Jess Poratti (Essex Junction, Vt.) in the 50th minute. Poratti's corner kick was perfectly placed inside the six-yard-box and found a 5'8" Stickelman overpowering the UNE back line.
  • UNE barely outshot the home team in the second half, 6-5, but all bids on goal were stopped by Haynes, who recorded her fourth shutout of the season.

GOALKEEPERS

  • Haynes made six saves in the winning effort for Wentworth and moves to 6-10-1 overall.
  • Pannone drops to 8-5-2 with the loss while making four stops for UNE.
