Leopards Open Season With 8-1 Win Over Anna Maria

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team swept the three doubles matches and won five of six singles matches as the Leopards opened the 2010 season with an 8-1 win over Anna Maria in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

 

Freshmen Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) and Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) took an 8-0 win at number three doubles over Anna Maria freshman Kayla Cummings (Auburn, Maine) and sophomore Brittany Quattrocchi (Verganes, Vt.).  Sophomore Natalya Cappellini (Falmouth, Mass.) teamed with freshman Alexis Cristaldi (Methuen, Mass.) to defeat sophomore Allison McCarthy (Lynn, Mass.) and freshman Kelly Blake (Southbridge, Mass.) at number two singles before junior Joanna Gustafson (Ashburnham, Mass.) and senior Meredith Gratton (West Chazy, N.Y.) completed the sweep with an 8-4 win over freshman Victoria Minotti (Shelton, Conn.) and classmate Emily Williamson (Spencer, Mass.). 

 

Cappellini and Gratton at third and fourth singles, respectively, with straight-set wins over McCarthy and Blake to clinch the match for the Leopards.  Hegner and Massaro claimed wins at number five and six singles – dropping one game between the two of them – with wins over Cummings and freshman Liz Sama (Windsor, Conn.).  Gustafson won at number one singles with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Minotti before Williamson took the AMCATS lone point of the day with a win over Cristaldi, 6-1, 6-2, at number two singles.
