Women's Tennis Snaps Losing Streak

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team won for the first time in 33 days, snapping a 10-match losing streak as the host Leopards swept Eastern Nazarene, 9-0, in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference match played at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club.

 

Wentworth took a 1-0 lead when sophomore Natalya Cappellini (Falmouth, Mass.) teamed with junior Joanna Gustafson (Ashburnham, Mass.) for an 8-2 win over Lions sophomore Elise Sleeper (Sanford, Maine) and junior Laura Keith (West Bridgewater, Mass.) at number one doubles.  Senior Meredith Gratton (West Chazy, N.Y.) teamed with sophomore Sophie Boyce (South Portland, Maine) to defeat freshman Katelyn Ostroski (Tiverton, R.I.) and sophomore Alexis Malloy (Greenbelt, Md.), 8-2, at number three doubles before freshman Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) teamed with sophomore Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.) for an 8-4 win at number two doubles over sophomores Sharon Lemire (Lyndeboro, N.H.) and Alexis Malloy (Wareham, Mass.).

 

Boyce, Massaro, and Flynn sealed the win for the Leopards with 6-0, 6-0 wins at numbers six, four, and five singles, while Gratton extended the lead to 7-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Keith.  Gustafson defeated Lemire, 6-4, 6-1, at number one singles, before Cappellini completed the sweep with a three-set win (7-5, 5-7, 7-1) over Sleeper.

 

The win improves Wentworth's record to 2-10 overall (2-8 TCCC) and the Leopards close out conference play on Saturday at Regis.  Eastern Nazarene falls to 1-12 (1-9) and concludes its fall season with a home match against Nichols on Saturday.
