BOSTON, Mass. – Winning the first six matches on the afternoon, the Wentworth women's tennis team got back on the winning track with an 8-1 victory over Eastern Nazarene in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club.
Senior Joanna Gustafson (Ashburnham, Mass.) and junior Sophie Boyce (South Portland, Maine) opened the match with an 8-2 win over junior Sharon Lemire (Lyndeboro, N.H.) and classmate Elise Sleeper (Sanford, Maine). The lead was extended to 2-0 when sophomore Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and junior Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.) defeated the Lions' Samantha Jones (Marion, Mass.) and senior Alison Cornell (Bolton, Conn.). Wentworth made it a clean sweep in double play when junior Lana Ho (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) and freshman Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) defeated freshman Cara Nelson (Wolcott, Conn.) and sophomore Juju Atwater (Weymouth, Mass.), 8-3.
Massaro gave the Leopards a 4-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Cornell at number three before Gustafson clinched the match with a 6-1, 3-0 (retired) win over Lemire at number one. Flynn bested Jones, 6-1, 6-0, at number four before Eastern Nazarene picked up its lone point of the match as Sleeper defeated sophomore Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.), 6-1, 6-4, at number two.
Ofer swept Atwater, 6-2, 7-5, at number six singles before a 6-2, 6-1 by Ho over Nelson at number five singles to wrap up the match.
Wentworth improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in CCC play. The Leopards host Western New England on Saturday at Noon. Eastern Nazarene falls to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Lions step out of league play on Thursday when they host UMass Boston at 3:30 p.m.
