DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Alexandra Cifone (Bristol, Conn.) took advantage of a first flight singles appearance to help lead the Nichols women's tennis squad to a 9-0 victory over visiting Wentworth in a Friday afternoon Commonwealth Coast Conference match. Cifone improves to 3-0 over her career at the top spot.
Cifone dealt senior Joanna Gustafson (Ashburnham, Mass.) a 6-0, 6-1 defeat and teamed with first-year Kelsey Peterson (Fairbanks, Alaska) to grab an 8-4 win in the second singles flight over sophomore Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and junior Jillian Flynn (Billerica, Mass.). Peterson later bested Flynn 6-2, 6-0 in the fourth singles position.
Senior Chelsey Miller (Salem, Conn.) and junior Jillian McQuiggan (Weymouth, Mass.) cruised to an 8-1 win over Gustafson and junior Sophie Boyce (South Portland, Maine) as junior Catherine Jaworski (Belin, Vt.) and sophomore Erin Rivers (Bristol, Conn.) made an impression at the third doubles with an 8-3 victory over sophomore Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) and junior Lana Ho (Vineyard Haven, Mass.).
McQuiggan posted a 6-0, 6-2 win to open the singles portion of the afternoon defeating Massaro. Sophomore Nicole Marziarz (Southington, Conn.) used her third appearance of the season to down rookie Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) 6-2, 6-1 at the fifth singles spot. Jaworski bested Ho 6-2, 6-0 in the sixth singles flight, while Miller blanked her opponent with a pair of 6-0 sets in the second singles position.
Nichols (10-3, 7-0) resumes action on Saturday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. when Endicott is in town. The Bison and Gulls are currently tied atop the league standings and the match could determine the No. 1 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference tournament.
Wentworth (3-5, 2-5) hosts Emerson in a non-conference affair at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
