Women's Tennis Edges Gordon

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Nicole McColgan's Tewksbury, Mass.) three set win at number six singles broke a 4-all and gave Wentworth a 5-4 win over Gordon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads Saturday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots would hold a 2-1 lead after doubles, after taking the second and third flights. Sophomores Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.) had given the Leopards a 1-0 lead with an 8-3 win at number one doubles over Gordon freshman Lily Drescher (North Reading, Mass.) and senior Sarah Hickey (Stony Brook, N.Y.). Sophomores Hannah Damon (Mystic, Conn.) and Rachel Kaufman (Harleysville, Pa.) tied the match at 1-all with an 8-4 win over the Leopards' duo of sophomore Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I.) and McColgan before senior Jesse Dupre (North Billerica, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Eva Kenna (Harvard, Mass.) to defeat junior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and sophomore Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.), 8-6, at number two.

Corcoran evened the score with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Drescher at number one singles and a 6-0, 6-1 win for Massaro over Hickey at number two and a 6-2, 6-2 win at number four for Hegner over Damon at number four gave the Leopards a 4-2 lead.

Gordon claimed victories at number five when Kenna defeated Maccarone, 6-0, 6-2, and Dupre defeated Ofer at number five, 6-2, 7-5. In the deciding match, McColgan took the first set over Kauffman by a 7-5 score before dropping the second set, 3-6. In the third set McColgan used a 6-0 victory to lift the Leopards to the win.

With the win Wentworth improves to 2-2 overall (1-0 CCC) and is at Eastern Nazarene on Wednesday. Gordon falls to 0-2 (0-1) and hosts Nichols on Tuesday.
