Corcoran, Zapata Earn Weekly Accolades

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Two Wentworth Institute of Technology fall student-athletes have been honored by the Commonwealth Coast Conference for their stellar play through the first week of the season. Sophomore women's tennis player Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) was named the CCC Rookie of the Week while freshman women's soccer player Valeria Zapata (Pawtucket, R.I.) earned league co-rookie of the week honors.

Corcoran helped the Leopards to a 2-1 start by compiling a 2-1 record at both number one singles and number one doubles. In both of her singles wins she posted straight-set victories, including a 6-0, 6-3 win in Wentworth's 5-4, conference-opening win over Gordon on Sept. 8

Zapata has tallied three goals in Wentworth's first three games, helping the Black & Gold to a 1-1-1 start. In a 4-3 loss at Emerson on Sept. 5, she scored a pair of second half markers as the Leopards nearly rallied from a 4-1 deficit. Three days later she scored the game's only goal – coming with 24:38 left – as Wentworth defeated New England College, 1-0.

The Leopard women's tennis team is at Eastern Nazarene this afternoon while the women's soccer team is at Western Connecticut on Thursday night.
