BOSTON, Mass. – Training 2-1 after doubles play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team took five of six singles matches, en route to its second straight victory, a 6-3 win over Western New England.
With the win the Leopards even their record to 4-4 overall and stand at 2-3 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play while the Golden Bears slip to 3-6 (0-5). The four wins by the Black & Gold surpass the total number of wins by the 2012 squad, which finished 3-10.
Senior Kelsey Grode (Fairview, Pa.) teamed with sophomore Kelly Byrnes (Berlin, Conn.) to give Western a New England a 1-0 lead with an 8-5 win at number three over Wentworth senior Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) and junior Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I.). The Golden Bears extended their lead to 2-0 after the number one doubles team of freshman Joeanna Glantz (Agawam, Mass.) and graduate student Linda Mustafa (Chicopee, Mass.) defeated sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and junior Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.), 8-6.
Wentworth earned its lone point in doubles at number two when senior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) teamed with sophomore Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) to take an 8-4 win over senior Lindsey Brudvig (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) and freshman Corey St. Louis (Groton, Conn.).
Ofer defeated Byrnes, 6-2, 6-3 at number four singles to even the match at 2-all before Corcoran gave the Leopards the lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win at number one over Glantz. McColgan defeated Brudvig, 6-2, 6-3 at number three before St. Louis made it a 4-3 match with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 win over junior Marisa Page (Warwick, R.I.) at number five.
Wentworth clinched the match when Hegner defeated Grode in three sets (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) at number six and got a 6-7 (9-11), 6-0, 1-0 (10-8) win at number two by Massaro over Mustafa.
The Leopards host Suffolk on Thursday afternoon. That same day the Golden Bears are at The Sage Colleges.
