BEVERLY, Mass. – The Endicott College women's tennis team swept Wentworth Institute of Technology, 9-0, in the regular-season finale for both squads.
The Gulls got three, 8-1 wins in doubles play to start the match. Junior Amy Heacox (Marion, Mass.) teamed with Mackenzie Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) to defeat senior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.) and sophomore Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) at number two. Sophomores Suzie Newman (Dighton, Mass.) and Brittany Potter (Bedford, N.H.) won at number three over senior Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.) and junior Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I.). Endicott's lead increased to 3-0 after juniors Chrissy Martel (Westbrook, Conn.) and Natalie Egbert (Gorham, Maine) teamed up to defeat sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and junior Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.).
Heacox defeated Massaro, 6-0, 6-0 at number two singles to make it 4-0 and Egbert clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over McColgan at number three.
Newman defeated Ofer, 6-0, 6-0 at number four, Potter defeated Hegner, 6-1, 6-1 at number six, Rhodes defeated junior Maris Page (Warwick, R.I.), 6-2, 6-1 and Martel defeated Corcoran, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
With the win the Gulls secure one of the top three seeds in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament and will either host a first-round match on Tuesday or receive a bye to Thursday's semifinals. Endicott is now 9-3 (7-1). The Leopards see the fall portion of their season end with a 5-8 (2-6) record.
