Women's Tennis Notches First Victory of the Season

BOSTON, Mass. - The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 9-0 triumph over Lesley in non-conference action at Harvard University.

With the win the Leopards even their record to 1-1 while the Lynx fall to 0-1 after their season-opening match.

Doubles play saw freshman Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) team with classmate Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.) to take an 8-1 decision at number two over senior Victoria Bunker (Auburn, Maine) and sophomore Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.). Juniors Laura Boyd (Woodstock, Vt.) and Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) won at number three, defeating seniors Meghann Toomajian (Nahant, Mass.) and Carissa Iverson (St. Johnsbury, Vt.), 8-2, before juniors Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) took a 9-7 win at number one over freshman Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) sophomore Carlyn Barker (Murrieta, Calif.).

Singles play saw Boyd defeat sophomore Chrystal Skelton (Burlington, Mass.), 6-1, 6-0, at number five and Briggs' 6-1, 6-1 win over Barker at number three clinched the match for the Black & Gold.

Jodoin defeated Bunker, 6-0, 6-1, at number four and Mooney defeated Toomajian, 6-1, 6-1, at number six. The top two flights both needed three sets to complete as McColgan defeated Iverson, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) at number two and Corcoran defeated Kiddie, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at number one.

Both teams are in action on Saturday as Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play against Nichols and Lesley is at Anna Maria.
