Women's Tennis Edged by Worcester State

HOLDEN, Mass. – for the sixth straight season the Wentworth Institute of Technology and Worcester State women's tennis teams concluded a match with a 5-4 score. In a resumption of a match halted on September 2 due to inclement weather, the Lancers prevailed to even the series during this span at 3-all.

When the match began, the two teams split a pair of doubles matches as the Lancers took at 8-3 win at number two when sophomore Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) and junior Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.) defeated freshmen Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.). Wentworth evened the match with an 8-5 win at number three when juniors Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) and Laura Boyd (Woodstock, Vt.) defeated junior Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, Mass.) and junior Paige Moriarty (Feeding Hills, Mass.). The number one doubles match between junior Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) and Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Natalie Paul (Worcester, Mass.) was halted when the inclement weather came and when it resumed, Corcoran and McColgan took a 9-7 win to give the Black & Gold a 2-1 lead after doubles.

The Lancers took a 4-2 lead after freshman Fania Wolf (Sharon, Mass.) defeated Jodoin, 6-1, 6-1, at number four, Goncalves defeated Mooney, 64-, 6-0, at number six, and Shepard defeated Boyd, 6-1, 6-3, at number five. Wentworth evened the match at 4-all with wins at numbers one and two as Corcoran rallied to defeat Jankins, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-4, and McColgan rallied to defeat Candelieri, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, respectively.

With the match on the line Briggs took the first set over Paul by a 6-4 score before Paul forced a third set with a 7-6 (7-2) win. In the deciding set, Paul pulled out a 6-3 win to clinch the victory for Worcester State.

Both teams are in action on Saturday with conference matches. Wentworth hosts Gordon while Worcester State hosts UMass Boston.
