Rhode Island College Defeats Women's Tennis

WESTON, Mass. – Buoyed by a sweep of doubles play the Rhode Island College women's tennis team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 8-1, in a non-conference match played at Regis College.

Winners of two straight the Anchorwomen improve to 2-1 on the season while the Leopards suffer their first setback to stand at 1-1.

All three doubles matches were won by Rhode Island College by 8-4 scores. At No. 1, freshman Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) and junior Julie Reddy (Smithfield, R.I.) defeated Leopard sophomores Sam Webb (Westminster, Md.) and Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.). Senior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, R.I.) teamed with sophomore Laura Natasi (Smithville, N.J.) to defeat senior Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) and freshman Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.) at No. 3. The doubles sweep was completed when the No. 2 pairing of senior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) and junior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, R.I.) triumphed over senior Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.).

Reddy defeated Jodoin, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles before Campanella's 6-1, 6-1 win over McColgan at No. 2 clinched the match for RIC. Cannata defeated Mooney, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4, Reilly had a 6-1, 6-1 win over Briggs at No. 1, and Natasi defeated freshman Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.), 6-4, 6-1, at No. 5.

Wentworth picked up its lone point of the day at No. 6 when Webb defeated junior Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, R.I.), 6-3, 6-3.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday as Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a match against Salve Regina at Harvard University while Rhode Island College hosts Suffolk.
