WESTON, Mass. – After winning two of three doubles matches and four of six singles matches, the Eastern Nazarene College women's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak with a 6-3 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at Regis College.
With the win the ions improve to 2-3 overall and pick up their first CCC win (1-2) while the Leopards suffer their third straight setback to stand at 1-3 (0-2).
In doubles action, Wentworth took a 1-0 lead after freshman Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.) teamed with senior Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) to win at No. 3, 8-2, over sophomore Alecia Tubbs (Rochester, N.Y.) and senior Julie Sutton (Middletown, Conn.). Eastern Nazarene tied the match with an 8-2 win at No. 1 as freshman Adele Duval (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Lindsey Steelman (Darlington, Md.) defeated sophomores Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.). The Lions took a 2-1 lead at the conclusion of doubles as senior Tressa Burrello (Herkimer, N.Y.) and sophomore Jordan Cressman (Bowmanstown, Pa.) took an 8-4 win at No. 2 over senior Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.).
Eastern Nazarene extended its lead to 3-1 when Burrello defeated Jodoin, 6-3, 6-1, at No.1 singles before Wentworth pulled back within a point after Butts defeated Tubbs, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5. However, that would be as close as the hosts would come as the Lions used a 6-3, 6-1 win by Steelman over McColgan at No. 2 and a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 win by Duval over Briggs at No. 1 to clinch the match.
Mooney defeated Cressman, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 at No. 4 and Sutton defeated sophomore Sam Webb (Westminster, Md.) at No. 6, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8)).
Eastern Nazarene hosts Lesley on Monday while Wentworth is at Nichols on Wednesday.
