Women's Tennis Rallies Past Lesley

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Snapping a four-match losing streak, the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team defeated Lesley, 7-2, in a non-conference match at Buckingham Browne & Nichols.

With the win the Leopards improve to 2-4 on the year with the win while the loss dips the Lynx to 0-6.

Leopard freshman Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.) teamed up for an 8-0 victory to start the night for Wentworth in No. 3 doubles before Lynx junior Frances De Leon (Murrieta, Calif.) and senior Rose Heller (State College, Pa.) evened the match with an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles.

Lesley sophomores Caroline Kiddie (Scituate, Mass.) and Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) broke the 1-1 tie as they outlasted Leopards sophomores Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.) 9-8 (7-5) in the top doubles flight to take a 2-1 lead after doubles.

Sophomore Sam Webb (Westminster, Mass.) got Wentworth off on the right foot in the singles portion of the match as she posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lynx sophomore Courtney Goggin (Cheshire, Conn.) in the No. 5 match. DeGouveia and Mooney each followed with wins in No. 6 and No. 4 singles, respectively. DeGouveia took down junior Hannah Levensailor (Ayer, Mass.) in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 before Mooney topped Pereira 6-2, 6-1.

Wentworth freshman Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) clinched the match for the guests with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Heller.

Senior Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) downed De Leon 7-5, 6-4 in the second singles match before Briggs capped the night with a comeback 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-3) win over Kiddie in the top match.

Wentworth hosts Roger Williams on Saturday while Lesley is at Bay Path, also on Saturday.
