Roger Williams Flies Past Women's Tennis

MILTON, Mass. – The Roger Williams University women's tennis team used a pair of 8-0 wins in doubles play and didn't drop a set in singles play en route to a 9-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played at Curry College.

With the win the Hawks improve to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in league play while the Leopards slip to 0-4 in CCC play.

No. 3 doubles saw sophomores Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) and Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) take an 8-0 win over freshman Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.) and senior Nicole Mooney (Waterford, Conn.). At No. 2 doubles, senior Lauren Schmidt (South Windsor, Conn.) and junior Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) won, 8-0, over senior Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.). The Hawks completed the sweep with an 8-3 win at No. 1 when junior Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) and sophomore Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) defeated sophomores Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.).

Schmidt defeated Butts, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to give the visitors a 4-0 lead before Akerman clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Mooney at No. 2.

Riley defeated DeGouveia, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6, Kaiserman defeated Briggs, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1, Hughes defeated McColgan, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 2, and sophomore Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) defeated sophomore Sam Webb (Westminster, Md.) at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0.

Both teams continue conference play on Tuesday with Wentworth at Gordon and Roger Williams at Eastern Nazarene.
