Women's Tennis Doubled up in Season Opener

HOLDEN, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team swept doubles play and took three of six singles flights, en route to a 6-3 win of Wentworth Institute of Technology in the season opener for both squads.

Senior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) and junior Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) took No. 1 doubles with an 8-6 win over juniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.). Freshman Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and sophomore Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) edged freshman Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and junior Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.), 9-8, at No. 2 doubles before junior Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Isabel Badeau (Cumberland, R.I.) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3 over sophomore Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and sophomore Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.).

Monteiro got the Leopards on the board with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Badeau at No. 6 singles and Briggs made the match 3-2 with her 6-4, 6-4 win over Jankins at No. 1. Khafaga put the Lancers ahead 4-2 with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Webb at No. 4 and Taylor's 6-4, 7-5 win over DeLuca at No. 2 clinched the match. After dropping the first set, 1-6, freshman Emma Jurkiewicz (Andover, Mass.) defeated Green, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5. Jodoin was defeated at No. 3, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Wentworth hosts Endicott on Saturday in its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener which wll be played at Regis College.
