Western New England Sneaks Past Women's Tennis

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team dropped a pair of tightly contested doubles matches and host Western New England took four of six singles matches as the host Golden Bears defeated the Leopards, 6-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.

With the win Western New England improves to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in CCC play while Wentworth falls to 0-3 (0-2).

It was the Leopards who would take the first match of the day when sophomore Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) took an 8-4 win over junior Kim Phu (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and sophomore Petra Martinelli (Vernon, Conn.) at No. 3. Junior Lauren Sell (Milford, Conn.) and freshman Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) teamed up for a 9-7 win at No. 2 over freshman Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and junior Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.). The hosts took a 2-1 lead with a 9-7 win at No. 1 when senior Joeanna Glantz (Agawam, Mass.) and junior Christina D'Agostino (Bohemia, N.Y.) defeated juniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.).

Western New England took a 3-1 lead after a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win at No. 5 by senior Corey St. Louis (Gorton, Conn.) over freshman Emma Jurkiewicz (Andover, Mass.) and Schrader's 6-2, 6-0 win over Webb at No. 4 made it a 4-1 score. Glantz clinched the match for the Golden Bears with a 6-3, 6-2 win over DeLuca at No. 2.

Jodoin battled to a three-set win over D'Agostino at No. 3, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8, freshman Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) bested Monteiro at No. 6, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, and Briggs picked up a win at No. 1, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

Wentworth is at Rhode Island College on Thursday.
