Simmons Rallies Past Women's Tennis

BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons College tennis team erased a 3-0 deficit after doubles play by sweeping the six singles flights and defeating Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-3, in non-conference action at the Daly Field Courts.

With the win the Sharks improve to 3-4 while the Leopards fall to 2-9.

Juniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) picked up Wentworth's first point with an 8-4 win over freshmen Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) and Mai Driesen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) at No. 1. Freshman Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and junior Emily Joidoin (Burrillville, R.I.) gave the Black & Gold a 2-0 lead as they tripped up freshmen Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam) and Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) at No. 2. At No. 3, sophomores Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and Veronica Monteiro (North Andover, Mass.) completed the sweep with a 9-8 (7-4) win over sophomore Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) and junior Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.).

Schroedl gave Simmons its first point of the afternoon when she defeated Briggs at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Driesen defeated Webb at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1, and junior Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) evened the match at 3-all with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Monteiro.

Johnson bested Jodoin, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles which was followed by Medici's match-clinching win over Butts at No. 5, 6-3, 6-4. Nguyen edged DeLuca, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2.

Wentworth concludes Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Saturday at Eastern Nazarene.
