Roger Williams Soars Past Women's Tennis

BRISTOL, R.I. – The sixth-seeded Wentworth Institute of technology women's tennis team saw the fall portion of its season come to an end on Wednesday afternoon after it was defeated by third-seeded Roger Williams, 5-0, in an opening round match of the 2016 Commonwealth Coast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament.

Making its first postseason appearance since 2009, the Leopards fall to 4-10 while the Hawks improve to 11-3 and will travel to second-seeded Endicott (9-3) on Oct. 18 for a semifinal match.

In doubles play, juniors Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.) and Kathryn Hughes (Westford, Mass.) won at No. 1, 8-1, over freshman Olivia DeLuca (Dracut, Mass.) and junior Emily Jodoin (Burrillville, R.I.). At No. 3, senior Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) and freshman Jessica Magliato (New Rochelle, N.Y.) defeated sophomores Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) and Veronica Montero (North Andover, Mass.), 8-1. Junior Gabrielle Riley (Barnstable, Mass.) teamed with junior Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Maine) to give the hosts a 3-0 lead after doubles with an 8-4 win over junior Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and sophomore Kelsey DeGouveia (New Bedford, Mass.) at No. 2.

At No. 3 singles, Akerman defeated Jodoin, 6-0, 6-0, before Stankiewicz clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Butts.
