Fast Start by Gordon Spoils Women's Tennis' League Opener

WENHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team dropped its Commonwealth Coast Conference opener, 7-2, to Gordon College in a match played at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

With the win the Fighting Scots improve to 2-1 on the season while the Leopards fall to 0-2.

Gordon swept the three doubles matches with junior Kaelyn Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and senior Maddie Berry (Paso Robles, Calif.) winning at No. 1, 8-5, over freshman Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.). At No. 2 doubles, juniors Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) and Gabrielle Brucker (Eleva, Wisc.) defeated senior Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.), 8-1. Senior Katherine Jeffreys (Parkton, Md.) teamed with freshman Caitlin Kwok (Dana Point, Calif.) to complete the doubles sweep with an 8-0 win over sophomore Jasmine Andrade (Dorchester, Mass.) and senior Mackenzie Jones (Granville, Mass.).

In singles play the Fighting Scots picked up four wins as Hall (No.2), Berry (No. 3), and Kowk (No. 4) won their respective matches as did sophomore Emily Ontiveros (Sylmar, Calif.) who won at No. 5. Wentworth picked up three-set wins at No. 1 as Sollecito improved to 2-0 on the season and at No. 6 with Jones winning her match. Both players dropped the first set and forced a tiebreaking set with a second-set win. Sollecito won hers, 10-3, while Jones battled to an 11-9 win.

The Leopards host Eastern Nazarene on Saturday.
