Women's Tennis Records First Victory of the Season

WESTON, Mass. – Freshman Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and senior Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) each won singles matches and were victorious in each of their doubles flights to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team notch its first win of the season, a 5-4 triumph over Salve Regina at Regis College.

With the win the Leopards improve to 1-6 overall and 1-3 in league play while the Seahawks fall to 2-5 (1-4).

Briggs and fellow senior Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) got Wentworth on the board with an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles over junior Abigail Burke (Harwich, Mass.) and junior Darcy Carlin (Brewster, N.Y.). The Leopards took a 2-0 lead as Sollecito and junior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.) took an 8-3 win over freshmen Laura Kirck (Groton, Mass.) and Erin Stangel (Old Saybrook, N.Y.) at No. 1. Salve Regina cut the lead to 2-1 as freshman Annemarie Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.) and junior Anna Godshalk (Orleans, Mass.) picked up an 8-4 win over senior Mackenzie Jones (Granville, Mass.) and sophomore Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.).

Stangel defeated Webb at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1, to even the match at 2-all before Briggs defeated sophomore Priscilla Gaspard (Brockton, Mass.), 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2 and Sollecito gave the leopards a 4-2 lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kirck.

Burke defeated Butts, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 4 to cut the lead to 4-3, however, McGibbon's 6-4, 6-3 win over Haas at No. 6 clinched the match for Wentworth. At No. 5, Carlin defeated sophomore Jasmine Andrade (Dorchester, Mass.), 7-5, 6-2.

Wentworth is at Rhode Island College on Tuesday.
