Western New England Outlasts Women's Tennis

WESTON, Mass. – Junior Petra Martinelli's (Vernon, Conn.) win at No. 5 clinched the match as the Western New England University women's tennis team doubled up Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Sunday afternoon at Regis College.

With the win the Golden Bears improve to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 1-9 (1-5).

Western New England took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Sophomore Rachel Bauer (Palmer, Mass.) teamed with senior Kim Phu (Wolfeboro, N.H.) to take and 8-3 win over sophomore Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.) and senior Makenzie Jones (Granville, Mass.) at No. 3. Wentworth evened the score after seniors Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) and Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) defeated freshman Maylene LaPress (Bedford, N.H.) and Martinelli at No. 2. A hard-fought battle at No. 1 saw the visitors walk away with the lead as sophomore Morgan Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and senior Christina D'Agostino (Bohemia, N.Y.) outlasted freshman Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and junior Ellen Butts (Brookfield, Mass.), 8-6.

Schrader defeated Briggs at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-0, to make it 3-1, however Sollecito's 6-3, 6-0 win over LaPress at No. 1 made the score 3-2. The Golden Bears again extended their lead to two at 4-2 when Bauer defeated Briggs, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4, before McGibbon bested freshman Jessica Cote (Groton, Conn.) at No. 4, 7-5, 6-1.

Martinelli clinched the match for the visitors with a 6-2, 6-2 win over sophomore Jasmine Andrade (Dorchester, Mass.) at No. 5 and D'Agostino defeated Webb, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 3.

Wentworth is at Curry on Tuesday.
