DUDLEY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season with an 8-1 loss to Commonwealth Coast Conference regular-season champion Nichols on Friday afternoon.
With the win the Bison improve to 12-2 overall and finish their CCC schedule unblemished at 8-0. The Leopards fall to 3-9 overall and wrap up conference play with a 2-6 record, narrowly missing qualifying for the CCC Tournament.
Nichols picked up wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles as Wentworth defaulted both of those matches. At No. 1 doubles, sophomores Amarie Settiwongse (Bangkok, Thailand) and Isabelle Leonardi (North Hampton, N.H.) defeated seniors Caitlyn Briggs (Lee, Mass.) and Sam Webb (Duxbury, Mass.) The Bison took a 3-0 lead after senior Ashley Dallaire (East Bridgewater, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Megan Nathanson (Scarborough, Maine) to defeat freshman Ali Sollecito (Taunton, Mass.) and sophomore Sam McGibbon (Pembroke, Mass.), 8-5.
At No. 5 singles, sophomore Emily Houchin (Durham, Conn.) defeated senior Mackenzie Jones (Granville, Mass.), 6-0, 6-0, and a 6-1, 6-0 win by sophomore Rachel McDonald (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) over Webb at No. 3 clinched the match for the hosts.
Sollecito battled Settiwongse at No. 1, however, was defeated, 4-6, 0-6, while freshman Juliana Herrera (Villavicencio, Columbia) defeated Briggs, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. McGibbon picked up Wentworth's lone point of the match as she rallied to win at No. 4. After dropping the opening set to junior Kristina Domantas (Holden, Mass.), she forced a pro-set tiebreaker with a 6-4 win in the second set and won the tiebreaker, 10-8.
